Safe Sport

Swimming Newfoundland and Labrador believes that everyone in the sport has the right to enjoy the sport at whatever level or position they participate. Athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers have the right to participate in a safe and inclusive training and competitive environment that is free of abuse, harassment or discrimination.

Swimming Newfoundland and Labrador believes the welfare of everyone involved in the sport is a foremost consideration and in particular the protection of children/athletes in the sport is the responsibility of each individual, member and special interest group in the swimming community.

SNC Safe Sport Training and Screening Requirements  (May 25, 2020)

Swimming Canada, with the support of its Provincial Sections and the CSCA, is proud to announce two new national initiatives that build upon our collective effort to provide a Safe Sport environment for all of our participants.

Starting the 2020-2021 season, all registered coaches will be required to complete safe sport training. There are two modules that will satisfy this requirement that are available to the swimming community. These include the Respect in Sport for Activity Leaders program and the Coaches Association of Canada’s (CAC) Safe Sport Training module. Registered coaches are required to complete one of these two modules in order to complete their registration for the 2020-21 swimming season.

Swimming Canada strongly encourages that coaches complete both safe sport training modules, as both programs offer vital and useful education to help make sport safer in Canada, while also providing valuable NCCP Professional Development (PD) points.

The Respect in Sport for Activity Leader/Coach online training module can be found here. The course costs $30 and coaches receive 3 NCCP PD points upon completion. Re-certification of the course will be required once every 5 years. Some Provinces have already mandated the Respect in Sport course and coaches who have already completed the course will not need to redo the course until 5 years has passed from their original completion date.

The CAC Safe Sport Training Module can be found here through the Locker. The CAC’s module is free of charge and coaches receive 2 NCCP PD points upon completion. Re-certification of the course will be required once every 5 years.

Additionally, Swimming Canada has recently published a National Screening Policy that aligns with the screening policies already in place in many Provinces. The national policy mandates that all registered coaches must submit a Vulnerable Section Verification (VSV) once every three years. This requirement comes into effect nationally for the 2020-21 season.
